The Super Tenere is a street bike designed to fuse the touring and off-road worlds, giving motorcyclists a machine that can go virtually anywhere and do anything. This powering-it-all machine is fuel injection and liquid-cooled 1199cc Parallel Twin, Yamaha chose a special configuration because of its compact size. Each slide has a piston in the cylinder bore and stroke measuring 98.0 x 79.5mm and compression ratio of 12.0:1 fuel. The firing order engine has been adjusted so that the two cylinders fire closely together so that the powerband that mimics that of a large single cylinder engine, which they claim to increase power transmission to the ground. A two-axis primary counter-balancer reduce unwanted engine vibration. This machine uses an eight-valve cylinder head with dual overhead camshafts valvetrain operation. Similar to its sportbike line, employing edge of the Tenere Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) rose-by-wire systems as well as D-Mode, a switch on the handlebar which allows the rider to switch between the two engine maps based on road conditions or increased preference. The technology comes in the form of the traction system of three-way adjustable controls. Engine power is transferred through manually driven clutch cable, 6-speed transmission and shaft final drive, which was chosen for the all-around durability and relatively low maintenance.
